NORWALK, Conn., May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Tyco Healthcare's Auto Suture Bariatrics division is sponsoring a surgeon training course that focuses on a relatively new surgical procedure called Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG), as an alternative for other forms of Weight Loss Surgery. As a leader in surgical training, Tyco Healthcare believes LSG is an important tool for treating Americans with the most severe form of obesity.

"This course is aimed at surgeons who are currently treating patients with morbid obesity who are seeking an alternative to current treatment methods. The LSG is an attractive option to other weight loss surgeries, as it can be as effective as gastric bypass with fewer risks. It's important to offer a procedure that has proven to be successful in reports from surgeon groups both in the U.S. and Europe," said Course Director Dr. Michel Gagner, a pioneer in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and Chief of Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery of Weill Medical College of Cornell University New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Jacques Himpens of The Free University, Brussels, Belgium, one of the international faculty members for the course, who has performed over 800 sleeve gastrectomy procedures, adds, "My experience has shown that patients undergoing a sleeve gastrectomy showed an excess weight loss of 60-70 percent after two years. Moreover, it appears that sleeve gastrectomy patients do not encounter the late complications we witness with band patients. However, perhaps not all patients will benefit from sleeve gastrectomy, such as those with a certain type of hernia, or those who are considered 'sweet eaters.'"

The LSG Surgeon Training Course will take place at:

The Doral Arrowwood Conference Resort

Rye Brook, NY

Friday - May 19, 2006 from 8am - 5pm.

There will be live Surgery Tele-Transmission to the Doral Arrowwood Conference Center from Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York as well as didactic learning sessions.
